This page provides some quick tips for helping you get the most out of the 2009 Acacia Research and Learning Forum (ARLF) site.

Using the Site to the Fullest

The purpose of this site is to facilitate informative and fun connections between Acacia researchers and ARLF participants, including those who will attend in person and those who will benefit from it virtually. Some information about the Forum can be viewed by visitors who have not logged in; however, we encourage you to fully explore and take advantage of all the features of the site by registering and then logging in each time you visit.

The brief one-time registration form can be accessed on the HOME/LOGIN page.

Registered ARLF website users enjoy the following benefits:

• Blogging;
• Connecting with Forum attendees and other ICT4D researchers and practitioners;
• Sharing ICT4D-related materials by uploading files to the site;
• Twitter-like microblogging;
• Registering on the GROUPS page for one of three tutorials that will be offered at the ARLF on October 8, and registering for the cocktail reception on October 5 and banquet dinner on October 7.

In addition to valuable pre-Forum information and social networking, the ARLF site will provide coverage of the Forum from October 5 onward through tools such as podcasting and blogging. There will also be opportunities for you to contribute to the documentation of this seminal event.

Entering Your Profile

Please take a moment to complete your profile so that others can connect with you. You can access the profile screen at any time by clicking the profile picture icon in the top left corner of the red menu bar on the top of the page. Alternatively, you can visit the MEMBERS page, enter your name under "Member seach by name" and then click on your hyperlinked name.

To edit your profile from inside the profile screen, click on ‘Edit profile’ to the right of your name.  And if your profile picture is blank, take a moment and upload a picture of yourself by selecting the ‘Edit profile picture’ link in the left column in your profile screen.

Connecting With Others on the MEMBERS page

You can connect with others on the site by entering the MEMBERS page and clicking on their user name or profile picture, which will take you to the user's profile.  Click on ‘Add friend’ below the user's profile picture to add them to your list of friends.  While you’re at it, say hello on their messageboard.

Blogging and Microblogging

Have your say by posting blog entries on topics of interest relating to ICT4D in general, the ARLF in particular, or any other relevant ideas or observations you’d like to share with the wider Acacia research community.

You can also post brief entries to tell others what you’re up to on the HOME/LOG-IN page (“New wire post”).

Viewing the Forum AGENDA and Registering for Events on the GROUPS page

Check out the calendar of ARLF plenary events as well as the three tutorials being offered on October 8 on the AGENDA page. Then register for the tutorial of your choice on the GROUPS page by clicking on the bolded title of the event and then “Join group.” While you’re on the GROUPS page, you can register for the cocktail and/or banquet to indicate that you plan to attend.

Files

You can share ICT4D-related material with other website users by uploading files through the ‘Tools’ pull-down menu in the red menu bar on the top of the page.

Checking out Activity on the Site

The HOME/LOG-IN page keeps you posted on all new activity on the site.  You can click on any item in the activity listing to go directly to the item.

Changing Your Password

You can change your password under “Settings” in the red menu bar on the top of the page.

Other Tools

Similar to Facebook, the site's functions can also be accessed directly from the Tools menu in the red menu bar on the top of the page.  Please feel free to explore and use the whole site!

Not receiving the website registration confirmation email from acaciaforum@acaciaforum.net

 
After registering, you should receive an email with the subject "[Your name] please confirm your email address!". If you do not receive this email, it could be that the message is getting caught in your spam filter. You may have to mark the email address acaciaforum@acaciaforum.net as a safe/non-spam address* in order to resolve this problem.
 
*Please note that detailed instructions on how to do this are specific to the spam/junk mail program used, so we recommend contacting your system administrator if you are unsure of how to do this. Alternatively, we recommend  registering with a different email address.

If you are having trouble, please don't hesitate to pose a question in the box below*, and the site administrator will reply in the same part of the page.
